Hardware Price Index: used processors now have their price index

For several months, the Price Index has tracked used graphics card prices, listing by listing. Processors now join it. Same approach, same tools, still free and with no account.

What you get for each processor

We track 85 processors, AMD and Intel, from the Ryzen 5 3600 to the latest Ryzen 9. 52 already have a price index; the others will get one once enough listings have been seen. For each one, the index is the median price of used listings over the last 30 days, with the range that holds half of the listings. An example recorded on 30 October: a used Ryzen 7 9800X3D goes for around €330, with half of the listings between €310 and €360.

The list can be filtered by brand, socket and memory type (DDR4 or DDR5). Some Intel processors accept both: the filter takes that into account. Each page shows the current listings, flags those clearly below the index, and sets apart those worth checking before you pay.

The tools, adapted to processors

What is my processor worth? The estimator gives a realistic selling price based on the model's index. Which processor for my budget? The budget tool lists the models your budget can buy used. And the deals page now brings together graphics cards and processors, with a filter by component.

Used or new: we show you both

When a model is still sold new, its page shows its current new price, and new alternatives on the same socket: no point suggesting a processor that won't fit your motherboard.

For older processors, such as the Core i7-9700K on the LGA1151 socket, no compatible new processor exists anymore. The page then suggests moving to a recent platform (AM5 or LGA1700): processor, motherboard and memory, with the total. Note that a recent motherboard does not always accept your old memory: we say so every time.

What about memory and storage?

We are working on it, with no date. For them, a model-by-model index would have too few listings; it would rather work by category: a 32 GB DDR5 kit, a 1 TB NVMe SSD. We will only open it once it is reliable. In the meantime, graphics cards and processors are in the Hardware Price Index.

Before buying used

A good price index does not protect you from a scam. Read our guide Buying a used PC part without getting scammed, especially the part about fake payment links.
