Direct drive was long reserved for enthusiasts with substantial budgets. That is no longer the case: for a few years now, quality DD bases have been available from €350, and the difference with a belt-driven wheel is immediate. No more play in the axis, more detailed force feedback, sensations closer to reality — a clear step up in quality, described the same way by every sim racer who has made the jump.

Fanatec CSL DD 5 Nm: the heavyweight of the ecosystem

The Fanatec CSL DD 5 Nm brought direct drive to a wider audience. Its main asset is its ecosystem: dozens of interchangeable wheels, compatible pedal sets and shifters, native Xbox compatibility. The Fanatec software is mature and well supported. Available in a bundle with a CSL wheel, it is a solid base to build on gradually.

Moza R5 and R9: sharp force feedback at a controlled price

The Moza R5 (5.5 Nm) is the CSL DD's direct competitor, with force feedback that is slightly sharper and a Pit House software suite that is remarkably complete for the price. The Moza R9 V3 (9 Nm) goes a step further: its additional torque brings out surface details and kerb impacts that the R5 cannot reproduce. For those who want the best force feedback without reaching the high end, the R9 is hard to beat.

Simagic Alpha Mini: the qualitative surprise

The Simagic Alpha Mini may well be the revelation of this range. Its software is cited by many experienced sim racers as one of the finest on the market — force feedback granularity, filters, customisation. Its feel is often compared favourably with bases twice the price. A premium option worth considering seriously if the budget allows.

Logitech G RS50: Logitech's first true direct drive

After years of belt-driven wheels, Logitech is entering the direct drive era with the G RS50. Its exclusive TRUEFORCE technology processes force feedback at a frequency reaching up to 4,000 Hz, which makes it possible to feel the texture of the asphalt, engine vibrations and the small jolts of the kerbs with a precision usually reserved for the segment above. The all-metal construction provides rigidity and heat dissipation, and console compatibility (PlayStation, Xbox) makes it one of the few DD bases playable directly on console without an adapter. The drawback is clearly its software, fairly minimal next to the configuration suites offered by Moza or Simagic, but sufficient for the large majority of use cases.

For a first direct drive, the Moza R5 or the Fanatec CSL DD offer the best value for money. If you already know you will spend several years on this hardware, go straight to the Moza R9 or the Simagic Alpha Mini — you will not regret the difference in torque and precision.
